ADAC witnesses 18% rise in cargo growth amid heavy investment

Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) has released its April figures, which show that the airport saw an 18% rise in cargo growth against the same month last year, and a massive 41% increase in passenger traffic over the same period.

The results are in contrast to IATA's growth trends, with global rates set to grow at 5.1%, according to the international body.

Among the new airlines that have started operations from Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA) in 2008 are the cargo carriers, Midex Airline and Cargoitalia.

The latter recently became the 38th international airline operating out of the facility, and will operate twice-weekly services between Abu Dhabi and its home base at Milan-Malpensa Airport.

In addition to growth in passenger and freight throughput, a recent survey on airport expansion has placed ADIA's US$6.8 billion investment plan as one of the largest in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The poll, conducted by Streamline Marketing Group and the organisers of the Dubai Airport Show, highlighted that investment of this nature is fuelled by strong national economic growth and the rapid development of state-owned airlines, like Etihad Airways.

The plan is set to boost ADIA's cargo capacity to 2.5 million tonnes per year in the future, and it also hopes to cope with up to 20 million passengers annually by 2011.

"Some of the best airports in the world, with the latest airport technology, systems and security are being constructed in this region," announced Mohamed Al Bulooki, ADAC's director of marketing and communications. "Abu Dhabi is set to benefit from the region's aviation growth, due to its strategic position between East and West, and will become one of the most important aviation hubs of the future."
