wi-tribe launches WiMAX service in Jordan

wi-tribe, the new regional WiMAX provider has launched services in Jordan this week.

The company, a joint venture between Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and the AA Turki Corporation for Trading and Contracting (ATCO), is initially providing WiMAX broadband internet service for West Amman, but plans to expand across the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

In Jordan, wi-tribe is focusing its launch services on providing fixed-location wireless internet access for residential and SOHO users, using the 3.6 GHz frequency, with customer equipment from Airspan.

Customers can sign up to the service through six retail outlets, or call the company. Sales representatives will then visit the customer premises and provide set up, with the company aiming for a much faster service provision than is possible with traditional wired internet access service.

wi-tribe will initially be offering two types of service, one for regular subscribers, and one for short term visitors to the country. The regular service will work on either a flat rate annual or monthly fee, based on the connection speed provided, with 256 Kbps, 512 Kbps, 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps versions with no cap on usage. Fees for the monthly service range from JD 17 ($24) per month for the 256 Kbps package, up to JD 40 ($ 6) for 2 Mbps, with reduced rates for annual subscription. Customers can either buy or rent the modem.

For short term users, which is aimed at business people visiting the countries, or students in Jordan for holidays, the package is available in four speeds, with a monthly fee of between JD 22 ($31) and JD 45 ($63) plus modem rental.

The initial service will only be for data internet access, but the company plans to launch VoIP services, and to include other cities in Jordan, in the next phases of deployment.
