The fifth contract of Dubai's Parallel Roads Project has been awarded at a cost of $462.8m to Sungwon, one of South Korea’s biggest construction companies.
The contract will see the construction of a road extending 108km from Sheikh Rashid Road ending at the outskirts of the Abu Dhabi, state news agency WAM reported on Saturday.
“Parallel Roads Project is one of the biggest projects carried out by the RTA. It includes construction of bridges and intersections at the juncture of Parallel Roads with perpendicular roads in a sector extending 42km in length,” Mattar Al Tayer, executive director of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said in a statement.
The fifth phase is the most expensive out of 10 total phases undertaken by the RTA. So far, five contracts have been awarded and four are under construction with the total value of current contracts reaching more than $1.7bn.
The new phase includes construction of roads, road improvements in the Business Bay Crossing and Burj Dubai areas, as well as construction of 30 bridges, two underpasses and 10 km surface roads.
The Parallel Roads Project involves construction of additional bridges at the bridge at the junction of Al Khail Road with Muscat Road, in an attempt to ensure smooth traffic flow to Burj Dubai and the Business Bay Crossing.
“Construction of the first contract, which includes construction of roads in Al Barsha and Al Qouz Industrial, is expected to be completed in February 2009. This phase, which will be constructed at a cost of $163.3m, extends from Jebel Ali Racecourse up to Muscat Road, extending 13 km in both the western parallel road and the eastern parallel road,” Al Tayer said.
