$27k fountain naming competition launched

by Amy Glass on Monday, 30 June 2008
COMPETITION LAUNCHED: UAE residents have the chance to win $27,000 if their suggestion is chosen as the name of Emaar's mega-fountain.

Dubai developer Emaar Properties on Monday launched a competition to find a name for its mega water fountain to be built in Burj Dubai Lake next to the world's tallest building.

The competition runs from July 1 to September 15, with the winner receiving a cash prize of 100,000 dirhams ($27,000), the company said in a statement.

The winner will be selected by a panel comprising Emaar’s senior management, architects and brand consultants.

UAE residents can suggest one name, which must be submitted online through a dedicated web page on Emaar website.

The developer said the fountains would be capable of shooting water over 150 metres into the air - the height of a 50-storey building - and stretch over 275 metres - the length of two football fields.

The $218 million project will be 25 percent larger than the iconic fountains at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, Emaar said.

Emaar said that like the Fountains of Bellagio its fountains would include an integral light and sound show and was expected to become one of Dubai’s major tourist attractions, drawing over 10 million visitors per year.

The fountains would shoot 22,000 gallons of water in the air at any given moment and feature over 6,600 lights and 50 colour projectors, it said.

Thanks for the science lesson

The point is, considering the amount of water wasted/spent in many other ways, this fountain in particular is not going to make that much of difference in the larger scheme of things.

Someone forgot their basic science

The water might be in a closed loop, but with the temperatures out here, you'll lose a lot of water to evaporation, meaning the fountain will need constant 'topping up'.
WOW

Bruno,
I don't think there's going to be much wastage of water. The way fountains usually work, the water gets pumped back in a loop, so very little is wasted.
"WoW"

I think "WoW" would be a great name for this fountain... first everyone is amazed by the 150m shot of water in the air, by the 270m span, by the amazing colours, lights and sounds... and then... (bring on the drum roll) They hear "the fountains would shoot 22,000 gallons of water in the air at any given moment..."
Does anyone have any idea of how much water will evaporate from this fountain daily? My guess would be, enough to green the barren farmlands in East Africa.
Seriously... yes, a fountain is nice... but what a colossal Waste of Water!
Hence... "WoW"
If anyone that reads this is an environmental analyst or specialist... they should do a quick calculation and let someone important know.
