Etihad passenger numbers surge 40%

Abu Dhabi-based carrier Etihad Airways said on Tuesday passenger numbers rose more than 40 percent in the first half of 2008 compared with the year-earlier period.

The state-owned airline carried 2.8 million passengers compared with 2 million in the first half of 2007, it said in a statement.

"The airline is well on track to achieve its target of carrying six million passengers by the end of the year," Etihad said.

Average seat load factor was 73 percent in the six months ending June 30.
