by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Saturday, 05 July 2008
GE Water & Process Technologies and Septech have announced a 20-year, multi-million dollar agreement to supply the UAE and Oman with water.
The deal is part of a strategy to take a slice of the Middle Eastern and Northern African regional water market, valued at US $183 billion over the next five years.
Pressure on fresh water supplies in the region is growing at an unprecedented rate, due to increased population, infrastructure and energy demands.
Under the agreement, Septech, a water infrastructure and specialised engineering firm, will buy a fleet of rapidly deployable GE Mobile Water Treatment Systems (GE MWTS). The fleet, to be owned by Septech and serviced by GE, will operate independently of a power source.
Housed in a 12m mobile container, the units are able to treat brackish, salt and wastewater and produce up to 1,000m3 (264,000 gallons) of pure water daily.
The Septech/GE MWTS will provide regional, industrial, municipal and infrastructure customers with their water, wastewater and process water requirements. A 24-hour, seven-day support service can help prevent construction sites from shutting down due to insufficient access to treated water.

"Our objective is to capture a significant percentage of the total water and wastewater market across the MENA region valued at US$183 billion over the next five years," said Septech CEO David Heffernan.
"Serviced by a 24-hour, 7-day a week specialised support and deployment team, ensures rapid dispatch and delivery of the units, preventing businesses and construction from shutting down due to insufficient access to treated water. Continuing operations and bringing adequate water supplies to MENA is at the heart of Septech's new offering," Heffernan added.
