A strike by Dubai taxi drivers ended soon after it started on Wednesday, with the disgruntled cabbies returning to work after their employer Dubai Taxi Agency agreed to discuss their complaints.

The cabbies parked their vehicles in front of the agency's main office in Dubai’s Al Muhaisnah area in the morning in protest, UAE daily the National reported on Wednesday.

Taxi drivers have been complaining about fines for perceived violations of their code of conduct, according to media reports.

Fines can be as much as 35,000 dirhams ($9,529) for a faulty global positioning system, 500 dirhams for picking up a client late and 100 dirhams if the driver cannot provide change to a customer.

Abdul Aziz Malik, CEO of Dubai Taxi at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), told the newspaper it was unclear how many drivers participated in the industrial action.

The cabbies would meet with management on Monday, he said.
