Passengers travelling on SriLankan Airlines will have to pay more for their tickets from Sunday after the carrier imposed a fuel surcharge of up to $80 on all fares amid soaring oil prices.
The airline said on Sunday it has introduced a surcharge of between $25 and $80 on all short, medium and long haul sectors and claimed it would still not cover the increase in its fuel costs, up by 25 percent from last year.
The airline, which operates 45 flights to the Middle East every week, said the new ticket prices will take effect immediately.
SriLankan joins a host of other airlines struggling to deal with rising fuel costs. Crude oil prices have increased by 85 percent in the last year from $75 a barrel in 2007 to $141 during the first half of 2008.
Last month the International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicted total net loss of between $2.3 billion and $6.1 billion for the aviation industry in 2008.
