Premiership football legend Robbie Fowler is poised for a big-money move to Dubai, according to reports.

He is expected to reject the option to stay on at Cardiff City to join Al-Ahli, one of the most successful clubs in the UAE, UK daily The Sun reported on Monday.

Al Ahli, literally translating to "national" in Arabic was established in 1970 when three local teams joined together to form the club. The club won three UAE League titles in the 70s and again won its fourth in 2006.

Fowler is currently in discussions regarding a possible extension of his Cardiff contract, having been offered a pay-as-you-play deal after an injury-interrupted season in Wales.

But it is rumoured he is eyeing a move to the Middle East, where he hopes to finish his career.

“The move is on,” a source told the newspaper. “Robbie’s been talking about finishing his career in Dubai for a while.”

Fowler's career began with Liverpool where he scored 120 premiership goals in an eight year period. He subsequently played for Leeds United and Manchester City, before returning to Liverpool in January 2006. He departed again 18 months later to sign for Cardiff City.

He has been capped for England 26 times, scoring seven goals. The most recent of these appearances came in the 2002 World Cup.

In association with Steve McManaman, his former Liverpool team-mate, Fowler has invested in several racehorses through a company named The Macca and Growler Partnership, most notably 2003 Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Celebration Chase winner Seebald.

In 2005, Fowler was listed as one of the 1,000 wealthiest Britons by the Sunday Times Rich List. Business interests including a large property portfolio have resulted in Fowler becoming the third wealthiest footballer in Britain.
