Dubai to get women-only buses
by Sean Cronin on Tuesday, 08 July 2008
Dubai plans to introduce women-only buses by the end of the year.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) plans to introduce a bus service exclusively for women by the end of this year, the Khaleej Times reported on Tuesday, citing an RTA official.
Women commuters have been demanding more seats in the buses, the newspaper said.
Buses currently in service have only 12 seats allocated for women and bus drivers sometimes do not stop to pick yup women if these seats are already taken.
A study is underway into where the RTA can boost the number of seats of women passengers, the newspaper said.

RAS says 'women want to be treated equally and this is where it starts@
May i ask has anyone noticed the following:
1.how many men occupy the ladies seats leaving the ladies standing?
2. equality for women means giving them equal opportunity. If all the women want to get to work and are in a bus...it's more space for all the men in the other buses....isn't it?
a win-win situation for all then?

Why reserve any seats other than for the elderly and handicap?
First come first serve and then standing room only

I hope the RTA starts the service sooner. This will be one move which will reduce the traffic on the road. Driving is not the profession of most the lady drivers on the road. Areas where there are a lot of female professionals working like Internet/Media cities, along SZR, Al Quoz, Health Care city should be targeted as most of the ladies driving to these areas will avoid driving if there is a convenient option for them. I know many of them started driving just because they had to wait hours to get a bus from these places. So, don't just keep it as a plan. Implement it immediately on a trial basis.

Well I see a point where ok maybe the women won't be harassed by men as an advantage in this scene (now how often does that happen in the bus?). Well its more like the only advantage I see. Think about it, would the RTA not do better getting more buses into the picture instead of a women only. Imagine this a stop with say about 24 men and 3 women. A bus arrives and has like 50 seats empty, WASTE! Secondly is the RTA just showing that women don't have to wait? i mean the guys would probably be wating way longer for a bus only to realise that the bus is a ladies only. I think its a step backwards, women say they want to be treated equally - I say this is where it starts!

This news is really welcome. There are so many working women in Dubai who use the bus services especially to travel to certain parts of the city like Al Quoz and other high density business areas. Many women have to wait long times at bus stops when buses do not stop since they are already full. Having 'women only' buses will help womenfolk get quicker access to buses and get them to their work quicker, saving them from waiting in the heat. Thank you RTA!!
