Stocks of Indian non-basmati rice in the UAE will not last beyond 10 days according to senior food traders in the region, UAE daily Gulf News reported on Tuesday.

It follows the introduction of a ban on exports of this type of rice in March, the newspaper said, citing Nandu Kumar, spokesperson for Emke Group, which operates Lulu Hypermarkets.

The ban caused a wave of panic buying, causing benchmark Thai rice prices to treble in the process.

Last year, the UAE imported about 750,000 tonnes of rice, mainly from India, Pakistan, Thailand and Egypt.
