Cirque du Soleil owners deny Dubai takeover bid

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Tuesday, 08 July 2008

Rumours of a US$2 billion bid by Dubai construction giant Nakheel for the rights to Cirque du Soleil have been played down by current rights holders.

Cirque du Soleil spokesperson Renee-Claude Menard said the production was not for sale, but she would not deny the company frequently received offers from interested buyers.

Industry speculation had been further fueled by the fact that Nakheel last year signed a 15-year licensing deal for the production, which will also see it build a permanent Cirque du Soleil theatre on the Palm Jumeirah.

Speaking to S&S, a Nakheel spokesperson denied the company had put forward a bid for Cirque du Soleil, but said government-owned Istithmar World had expressed an interest.

S&S was unable to secure further comment from Istithmar World at the time of press.
