Boeing rolls out new 777 Freighter

REACHING FOR THE SKIES: Boeing’s 777 freighter is revealed to the press corps during a ceremony at Paine Field airport.

Boeing has unveiled the world's longest-range twin-engine cargo jet, the 777 Freighter, at a ceremony at Everett, Washington.

The model has a maximum take-off weight of 347,450 kg, with a revenue payload capability of 103 metric tonnes, and will have a range of 4885 nautical miles with a full payload and general cargo densities.

This range should mean less traffic at hubs, fewer stops, lower cargo-handling costs and, shorter cargo-delivery times.

"We are excited to debut the newest member of our 777 and freighter families," said Larry Loftis, vice president of the 777 programme. "The 777 Freighter's unmatched range, efficiency and capacity as a twin-engine cargo airplane will all help to build on the Boeing leadership in the airfreight market."

Boeing has secured 78 firm orders from 11 customers for the new carrier, including Deucalion, which will lease to Aerologic, Emirates, Qatar Airways and FedEx. The first freighter is set to be delivered to Air France in the final quarter of 2008.

"The successful application of 777 technology to the cargo market is reflected in the broad customer base for the airplane," commented Kim Pastega, deputy programme manager and deputy chief project engineer for the 777 programme.
