Green stalls in Europe

A majority of IT directors polled in a recent study commissioned by Brocade, the data network solution vendor, are not concerned about their company's energy consumption and emissions.
Ulrich Plechschmidt, Brocade's vice president of EMEA, commented: "It is worrying to see the lack of concern over green credentials, considering the amount of recent industry pressure and media attention that has been given to this subject."
Energy efficiency was one the key issues raised by the report as close to half of those polled noted that their enterprises devote up to a quarter of their budget to energy costs.
More than 60% of the 2000 people polled across Europe agreed that the amount being spent on energy was too much. In an effort to address this challenge, two thirds of the IT directors said that they were already looking at means to reduce their energy expenditure. However, the study also showed that less than 20% of those key decision makers were actively seeking to pursue purchasing ‘greener' alternatives.
"There are technologies available today that have been specifically engineered to deliver significant energy savings, and businesses should seek these out wherever possible," stated Plechschmidt.
Plechsmidt suggested technologies like consolidation and virtualisation along with eco-friendly servers as methods of contributing to energy savings. He noted: "A lot of the time it's simply about reviewing one's IT environment and looking at ways to create greater efficiencies. There are a number of solutions on the market that provide organisations with a low risk way to evolve their IT infrastructures for maximum performance."
The survey polled qualified respondents from the UK, France, Germany, Benelux, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland.
