The University of Sharjah's Dental College has established an affiliation agreement with Temple University in Pennsylvania to school graduate dentists in implantology.
Under the terms of the deal, faculty members from Temple University's dental school will offer classes at the Sharjah campus over the course of six weekends during 2008 and spring 2009.
Dr Jon Suzuki, the associate dean for graduate education and international relations at Temple's dental school, is leading the programme."Temple University benefits in several different ways from this affiliation," Suzuki said.
"We get the opportunity to interchange with an international university and ultimately we hope to be carrying out some clinical research projects."
The course is already underway, with the next module scheduled for August. Two further modules will take place in December and then April next year. The current course has around 30 local dentists participating and Suzuki said that there are plans to run the course again next year.
"It has been very successful so far and we are projecting an intake of around 40 dentists next year," Suzuki said. "We have a tremendous interest from our faculty for subsequent years of teaching at Sharjah."
The curriculum for the course was jointly developed by Temple University and Sharjah dental college. It is designed as an introductory course, covering only the basics of implant dentistry.
"It is primarily an entry level introduction for the clinician who wants to be able to surgically place dental implants at his practice," Suzuki said. "There is more advanced training that members of our faculty [offer] but that is for a second tier course."
