The United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Health (MoH) has moved to close six medical clinics after inspections revealed the presence of untrained staff posing as doctors and nurses, and unregulated treatments.
The Ministry’s Medical Practice and Licensing Department has announced it will prosecute five staff, so serious were the breach of MoH regulations.
“One rehabilitation centre had women working there with no medical background who wore inappropriate clothing,” Dr Amin al Amiri, the chief executive of the department, told press. “They have been brought before the legal system.”
At another clinic a staff member was reported to be practising 'cupping', where blood is drawn from patients suffering from scoliosis. “Uneducated medical practices like this could kill people,” Dr Amiri warned.
The Ministry said that centres that employed unlicensed staff were breaking the law.
