Sports City assigns works contract for mall

by Lynne Nolan on Thursday, 10 July 2008

Dubai Sports City has announced the appointment of NSCC as the enabling works contractor for its retail development Arena Mall.

The mall, set to be the largest retail destination within Dubai Sports City, will be directly linked to the 25,000 seat cricket and events stadium, and the 10,000 seat multi-purpose indoor stadium and occupies a prominent location within the development.

Comprising approximately 1.4 million square feet of gross leasable area, the mall will be anchored by a 140,000ft² hypermarket, an interactive and educational family entertainment centre, 12 screen cinemas, two food courts and an array of over 300 fashion, convenience, family and leisure destination stores.

NSCC are pioneers in foundation and marine works, and regional leaders in the design and construction of foundation engineering solutions and it was the first company to introduce piled foundations to the UAE in the early 1970s.

The duration of the construction enabling works will take approximately seven months to complete and includes site preparation, shoring works, and the excavation of 1.1 million cubic metres of dirt. Enabling work on Arena Mall will begin within four weeks.

“We are delighted to have appointed NSCC as the enabling works contractor for Arena Mall. This appointment is significant of the next chapter in Dubai Sports City’s retail development,” said Khalid Al Zarooni, president of Dubai Sports City.

Excavation and shoring are the initial steps required to construct the three basement levels of the Arena Mall complex which will house over 7000 car parks, exceeding regional shopping centre standards.

“Part of Dubai Sports City’s core philosophy is to engage the ‘best of breed in business’ in every aspect of our operations, as a result we have chosen to partner with NSCC who have an exceptional track record in past projects,” added Zarooni.

“Our partnership with Dubai Sports City is one that we are extremely proud of. The development is continually making strides towards timely completion and we are very excited to be a part of what will be the world’s first integrated sports city,” said Reji John, senior director, NSCC.

Dubai Sports City (DSC), the cornerstone project of Dubailand, is a $4 billion, 50 million ft² mixed-use development, which will be the world’s first integrated purpose-built sports city.

The development will be built around five major sports venues: a multi-purpose outdoor stadium, multi-purpose indoor arena, cricket stadium, field hockey stadium, and a 72-par, 18-hole championship golf course designed by South African star Ernie Els.

As the primary shopping destination at Dubai Sports City, Arena Mall, will have a leasing capacity of 1.4 million ft². This will be complemented by the North Point and South Point retail hubs and a waterfront promenade featuring boutiques, restaurants and cafes.

Designed as a lifestyle development, Dubai Sports City will also feature comprehensive community facilities including the Next Generation Country Club and spa facility, shopping precincts, a range of schools including The Bradenton Academy, medical facilities, community centres, and hotels.
