Bahrain has secured the release of eight nationals held without charge in Saudi Arabia for the past five months, official media reported on Saturday.

The eight, all members of the Shi'ite majority community of the Sunni-ruled archipelago, had been detained near a military site in the Saudi capital Riyadh regarded as a forbidden zone, their families said.

Their release followed an appeal by King Hamad to Saudi Arabia's ultra-conservative Sunni authorities and attested to "the deep botherly relations between the two countries", the official BNA news agency said.

In May, four Shi'ite-led opposition groups called for the release of the eight who they said had been detained in Saudi Arabia on February 28 "without having committed any offence... and simply for having entered a forbidden zone by mistake".
