The price of some medicines in the UAE will soar by as much as 21 percent as the strengthening Euro has fuelled inflationary pressure in the sector.
The price of 1,129 drugs for both chronic and non-chronic diseases will be increased following a Cabinet decision announced by the Ministry of Health, Khaleej Times reported.
Around 600 European-manufactured drugs to treat non-chronic conditions will rise by about 21.4% while 530 medications for chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension will increase in price by about 5.85%, the newspaper said, citing Minister of Health, Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qutami.
The price hikes have been blamed on extra import costs incurred as a result of the strengthening Euro.

The authorities should give the public a break at least as far as healthcare is concerned. Most insurance companies do not cover existing conditions such as diabetes. If prices of such regular medicines vital to survival is to go up, what is one to do? You can't start controlling your insulin intake? Rising import costs should be absorbed by subsidies.
