50 heat-related illnesses treated in three days

More than 50 cases of heat-related illnesses have been reported at hospitals across the UAE in the last three days.

As temperatures peaked at over 50 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, it was revealed that a further 49 heat exhaustion cases have been seen by doctors at Dubai's Rashid Hospital since June, the Khaleej Times reported on Wednesday.

Al Ain Hospital received two heat exhaustion cases and at least 39 patients complained of kidney pain as a result of dehydration during the past three days.

The Seif Obadullah Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah received six patients who suffered from dehydration and low blood pressure on Tuesday.

Weather experts say the rapid urbanisation of places like Dubai has led to an average temperature increase of 0.6C.

Their comments came as Minhad, on the outskirts of Dubai, recorded 52.2C on Tuesday when Abu Dhabi recorded 48C, Dubai 44.4C, Sharjah 46C, Al Ain 47.6C and Ras Al Khaimah 44C - all considerably higher than Dubai’s July average of 41C.
