Inspecting gadgets

Asus Lamborghini VX3

Asus might as well brand the VX3 "the laptop for exhibitionists". Or, "the anti-thesis of refined, discreet performance". After all, sticking a great big Lamborghini logo on the front of a notebook and slathering it in (optional, thankfully) yellow paint is bound to elicit opinions - not all of which are likely to be positive.

Like the cars, Asus' Lamborghini range has always had a reputation for good build quality and tactile materials and the VX3 doesn't disappoint. The hinge area is made of titanium alloy, while the leather wrist rest is stitched in exactly the same way as in a real Lamborghini (which is more likely to matter to aspiring rather than current owners of the cars). Even the webcam is protected by a sapphire crystal lens, which nearly matches diamonds for hardness.

The hardware specs, though, are satisfactory rather than outstanding, given the price that this machine will sell for.

One would certainly expect nothing less than a range-topping Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5GHz, 4Gbytes of RAM, a 320Gbyte hard drive and an Nvidia Geforce 9300 graphics card with 256Mbytes of dedicated RAM. The VX3's also well supplied for connectivity with all the usual connections plus HSDPA wireless and weighs a reasonable 1.7kg with battery.

Regardless of the level of supplied kit, it's hard to escape the VX3's shouty looks - and the sneaking suspicion by everyone who clocks it that a Lamborghini laptop is about as close as its owner is ever likely to get to a real one.
