Oman plans to invite bids from regional and international companies for the construction of a 1,000 MW power and water desalination plant in Duqm, the head of the Authority For Electricity Regulation said on Thursday.

"This is going to be one of the biggest power plants in the country. Once consultants have been appointed for the job, then the bids will start," John Cunneen, Authority For Electricity Regulation Executive Director told newswire Reuters.

"The project would be awarded on a build, own, operate and transfer [BOOT] basis," he added, without giving a date.

The power plant will be part of the $20 billion project to develop the Duqum city. It also includes an oil refinery, a port and ship repairyard.

In April, Oman awarded Daewoo Shipbuilding and local firm Galfar a contract worth 170.2 million rials ($442.2 million) to build the Duqm port infrastructural work. (Reuters)
