Dubai's Road & Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded of 1.29 billion dirham ($351 million) contract for the second and third phases of Al-Khail road widening project, the UAE's official news agency WAM said on Saturday.

It awarded a 851.9 million dirham contract to Gonal Construction and a 438.2 million dirham contact to ASCON Roads Construction, it said in a statement.

"This project is part of RTA drive to upgrade key roads network in the emirate and is a strategically important road corridor within the structural road network plan in the emirate of Dubai. RTA efforts are gathering pace to develop and widen key arterial roads in Dubai," Matar Al-Tayer, the RTA's chairman and executive director, was quoted as saying.

Overall responsibility for the project which consists of a multi-level interchange at the junction of Al-Khail Road and Emirates Road and six bridges in the shape of a full clover leaf, has been awarded to Emirates Road Contracting Co.

The RTA was established by Dubai's Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum in 2005 after he transferred responsibilities for transport away from Dubai Municpality, chaired by his brother Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Dubai's deputy ruler.
