First-half sales at Dubai Duty Free (DDF) rose 31 percent to 1.9 billion dirhams ($537 million) and total turnover for the year is expected to pass the $1 billion mark, the company statement said in a statement on Sunday.

No profit figures were provided in the release.

"We are well on track to exceed $1 billion and that is a great achievement for all involved,” Colm McLoughlin, DDF's managing director, was quoted as saying.

Perfume was the number one category with sales of 275 million dirhams, up 34 percent from the same period in 2007, while gold sales rose 40 percent of 227 million dirhams, the company said.
