Dubai Duty Free H1 sales rise 31% to $537mn

First-half sales at Dubai Duty Free (DDF) rose 31 percent to 1.9 billion dirhams ($537 million) and total turnover for the year is expected to pass the $1 billion mark, the company statement said in a statement on Sunday.
No profit figures were provided in the release.
"We are well on track to exceed $1 billion and that is a great achievement for all involved,” Colm McLoughlin, DDF's managing director, was quoted as saying.
Perfume was the number one category with sales of 275 million dirhams, up 34 percent from the same period in 2007, while gold sales rose 40 percent of 227 million dirhams, the company said.
Sales from cosmetics increased by 39 percent and electronics goods 28 percent, it added, without giving details.
The company has recently expanded its workforce by half to 3,000 ahead of expansion at Dubai International Airport.
Dubai Duty Free is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dubai's Department of Civil Aviation.
