Hospital cleaners out on strike
by Tom Arnold on Monday, 21 July 2008
Kuwaiti hospital cleaners staged angry demonstrations during a strike over nonpayment of their salaries.
The workers demonstrated outside their accommodation in Farwaniya in protest at being owed between three to six months of salary and at their overall low pay, the Kuwait Times reported on Monday.
Police, Ministry of Health officials and workers' company officials were called to the site.
Khalid Al-Azemi, the chairman of the Kuwait Labor Union, was quoted as saying by the newspaper that the staff had every right to go on strike despite facing repeated threats if they did so.
Hamad Al-Midadi, the ministry's assistant undersecretary, said negotiations were ongoing to settle all pending salaries.
