Qualcomm has followed up the recent launch of regional operations by appointing a vice-president of business development to chart its direction in the Middle East and North Africa market.

The advanced wireless solutions specialist has hired Jay Srage to oversee its expansion in the region and manage strategic relationships with local customers. This includes network operators, infrastructure equipment providers, mobile handset vendors and value added service developers.

Srage joins Qualcomm from Texax Instruments, where he recently spearheaded the marketing operations for its wireless terminals business unit. He also co-managed TI Ventures, the company's venture finance fund focused on start-up telecommunications organisations.

His decision to join Qualcomm's regional team comes at the same time as the appointment of former Samsung South Africa mobile boss James Nunn, who will carry out similar business development duties in Sub-Sahara Africa. "The insight and leadership of these two executives puts Qualcomm in a good position to strengthen its existing partnerships and foster new relationships to expand its market reach," claimed Jing Wang, executive VP of Qualcomm Asia-Pacific and Middle East and Africa.

Qualcomm is a recent addition to the Middle East IT circuit having only opened a branch office in the UAE three months ago. The facility serves as a sales hub for the region and allows it to provide support for partners involved in the mobile broadband market.
