Mosque shoe thief deported
by Andy Sambidge on Wednesday, 23 July 2008
A man convicted of stealing shoes from a mosque in Qatar, has been deported.
The Upper Criminal Court in Doha handed the Egyptian offender a one-year suspended sentence and immediate deportation, Qatar daily The Peninsula reported on Wednesday.
According to the charge-sheet, the man in his 50s, had stolen shoes from a mosque located in Al Rayyan while people were praying.
However, to his misfortune, a man who had arrived late for the prayers noticed the thief sitting at the gate of the mosque, strategically near the shoes.
When the man finished with his prayers and came out for his shoes, he found them missing. Other worshippers also emerged to find they had to return to their homes barefooted.
After a brief and spirited chase, the thief was found carrying a sack full of shoes.
He was then handed over to the police who then referred him to the Public Prosecution.
