Brighter skies ahead, says Boeing

Boeing has released its 20-year air travel forecast, which concludes that ongoing strong fundamentals, including long-term economic predictions and aviation market liberalisation – will result a US$3.2 trillion market for new commercial aircraft by 2027.

The company argues that a shift towards larger and more efficient aircraft is likely to keep the airfreight industry affordable, and that sustained worldwide growth will drive a 5.8% annual increase in the amount of cargo traffic taking to the skies.

Boeing also indicated its belief that air transport actually sustains many emerging market economies through the rapid transit of perishable goods, and that quick delivery can even add to the value of items such as fashion-wear and consumer electronics.

By 2027, according to Boeing, the number of freighters in service will have doubled, and a switch to larger aircraft will enable carriers to cope with demand on high-growth trade lanes, especially those in Asia.

“What we have learned is that our industry, which is based on the need to transport passengers and freight via our global aviation system, is extremely resilient,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president, marketing, Boeing, speaking at the Farnborough Air Show last month. “So this outlook both acknowledges our near-term challenges and takes a longer view, a period in which we see the basic factors underlying the need for new airplanes are strong.”
