The Dubai Travel and Tour Agents Group (DTTAG) has banned non-member agents from future meetings for the time being.
The group’s manager, Leo Fewtrell, said he was “fed up” with DTTAG sceptics turning up to meetings and questioning the organisation on its performance and from now on, would only invite members.
“I don’t see why they should come along and be party to our meetings and hear what our plans are if they are not willing to become members,” said Fewtrell.
“Those who still won’t join give the same excuses so I don’t know why they bother coming anyway.”
Fewtrell said he was no longer prepared for non members to ride off the back of the group’s success and would have to “go it alone” if they didn’t want to join.
DTTAG, which is due to stage its next meeting in August, now boasts 60 members, many of which represent the emirate’s leading travel companies.
The group is currently lobbying Emirates Airline to provide its members with training in the lead up to the carrier ditching agent commissions in October 1.
DTTAG has also urged the airline to support its pledge to replace hefty IATA bank guarantees with an insurance policy as well as assist with IATA’s phasing out of SSI agents at the end of the year.
Emirates Airline VP commercial sales (UAE) Majid Almualla told ATN the airline would help train the travel trade in the lead up to 0% commission and would “actively support” the “idea of an insurance scheme” to replace the IATA bank guarantees.
“We recognise that DTTAG is taking a lot of effort to address the concerns of the trade and we commend them for their efforts,” he said.
