Rumors of Apple CEO Steve Job's deteriorating health, sparked by his gaunt appearance when announcing the new iPhone 3G, have been exaggerated according to sources inside the company.

Official accounts stating that Jobs was taking antibiotics in response to a "common bug" at the time, coupled with finance chief Peter Oppenheimer's comments in a conference call that described the CEO's health as a "private matter", only encouraged the rumors to spread.

Apple's stock dipped close to 12 percent the next day before recovering to close at 2.6 percent down on the day, with doubts that Jobs' health might have been a factor.

The New York Times reported that Steve Jobs had to reassure associates that he's fine - "Jobs has reassured several people that he is doing well and that four years after a successful operation to treat a rare form of pancreatic cancer, he is cancer free." Sources wished to remain anonymous as they weren't authorized to comment on the issue.

Another inside source told BusinessWeek that they have "near-certainty that Jobs' cancer has not returned."

His recent weight loss was blamed on nutritional problems resulting from the operation, with Jobs undergoing surgery again earlier this year to remedy this.
