Thieves hit Yemen archeological site

THIEVES STRIKE: Robbers have been foiled attempting to dig up antiques at the Masna'a Maria archeological site. (Saba)

Robbers searching for antiques have struck an important archeological site in Yemen, for the second time in two months.

Security staff arrested one man for attempting to dig on the Masna'a Maria Antique Site in the Ans district, while the hunt is on for his two accomplices, Yemen’s state news agency Saba reported on Tuesday.

Ali Al-Sanabani, Dhamar branch director for the general authority for antiques and museum's, said antique robbers had attempted to “stealth into the site and starting digging process in the site's western area”.

Over 30 incidences of random diggings at antique sites at been reported in a number of Yemen districts.

The Masna'a Maria archeological site held antiques representing an important age of Yemen's history, Al-Sanabani said.
