Founded by ex-Google engineers, the new search engine Cuil has launched with claims that its search algorithm scans 120 billion webpages, which is believed to be three times the number that Google filters through.
Having raised $33 million in venture capital, Cuil offers no advertisements on its pages at present with the company stating that it won't monitor user searches to target advertising either.
Its biggest selling point is its method of identifying and displaying search results. While Google's technique uses the quantity and quality of links to websites, Cuil technology works by going into the actual content of the page.
Search results in Cuil are presented in a structured column format, similar to that of a magazine, with image thumbnails and longer text descriptions.
Cuil is just the latest company to challenge Google in the search engine business, following the likes of Vivisimo, Snap and most recently, Powerset, which has been acquired by Microsoft.
