Villagers in the Baha region of Saudi Arabia have smashed up their satellite dishes after an imam warned against watching Turkish soap operas “Noor” and “Lost Years”, which have become popular in the Kingdom after being dubbed into Arabic.
The local tribal chief in the village of Al-Hajr, 70km from the southwestern city of Baha, smashed his satellite dish and called on others to do the same following a Friday sermon, Arab News wrote on Tuesday, citing Al-Eqtisadiah daily.
The imam of the Imam Malik Mosque in Jeddah said he too would devote a sermon to the issue.
“The psychological effect that the Friday prayers have is strong, since people are gathered in one place and sharing one aim, which is obeying Allah,” Muhammad Al-Zahrani, a sociology professor at Umm Al-Qura University, said.
He added that a successful preacher needs to choose his words carefully and that he should also have the ability to understand the political and psychological mindset of the community.
