A damning report into the state of education in Kuwait has called for an overhaul of the school system, state news agency KUNA reported on Tuesday.

The study, which surveyed 1,820 teachers, revealed poor performance and development rates at all states of education and in all governorates across the Gulf state.

The consensus of those surveyed was that the school system is “rigid, non-motivational, discouraging of imagination, and poor in meeting the demands of students and societies today”, according to KUNA.

The authors of the report, Dr. Ali Asaad Watfa and Dr. Khalid Al-Rumaidhi of Kuwait University, called for in-depth studies and research on educational performance in order to help address the problem.

They said there is a need to “re-consider the objectives and the mode of operation and attitude in view of life and society today and the latest findings on the effect of the gender, scholastic stage, age, nationality and other factors in the education process”.

Kuwait’s school system has often been criticised for its poor standards of education.

The country’s education minister in January survived a no-confidence vote initiates by MPs for that they saw as a "serious deterioration" in educational standards.
