The Heir Apparent of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has reiterated Doha’s plans to host an Olympic Games, and revealed that the state will bid for the 2020 games.

Sheikh Tamim, who is also the Chairman of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), said on Wednesday that Qatar was determined to learn the lessons of its failed 2016 bid, and “bid for hosting the Olympic Games in 2020 as per set measures and standards”, Qatar daily The Peninsula reported.

Sheikh Tamim said organising such an event would have a positive impact on the people of Qatar and the people of the region as a whole, citing the successful organisation of the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

He made the remarks following the hoisting of the Qatari flag at the Olympic Village in Beijing yesterday. Sheikh Tamim was in the Chinese capital to take part in the IOC plenary session, being held on the sidelines of the Beijing Olympic Games, the newspaper said.

That would be a good waste of Qatar's time and money. Unless they can convince the world to hold the Olympics in winter (not considering conflict with the winter Olympics), how on earth can you have people competing in 50C weather?
