Qtel says has not requested new Indosat directors

Qatar Telecommunications Co (Qtel) said on Sunday it had not made a request to replace any directors at PT Indosat Tbk after it bought a stake in the mobile telephone operator in June.

The Qtel comment came after Qatari media reported that Indonesia had turned down Qtel's request to replace government-appointed directors at the Indonesian firm.

"Qtel has not made any request to replace any directors at Indosat," it said in a statement. "The board of directors is appointed by Indosat's board of commissioners, not Qtel."

Qtel bought the entire stake of Singapore Technologies Telemedia in PT Indosat, gaining a 40.8 percent stake.

It is studying new regulations by Indonesia's markets watchdog to determine their impact on a tender offer it had made for Indonesia's second-largest mobile telephone firm.

Qtel said Indosat shareholders will meet on Aug. 25 in Jakarta to appoint a new board of commissioners. (Reuters)
