Nokia marks Ramadan with special mobile apps

Among the Ramadan applications are Quran recitation and mapping services to locate major mosques.

Nokia today announced the launch of a number of specialised mobile applications and content designed specifically for the Holy month of Ramadan.

The vendor has built on last year’s offering, allowing users to read, search, bookmark or listen to Quran recitation. Using its Maps platform, the new services also features the locations of major mosques in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Pakistan.

According to Chris Braam, VP of Sales, Nokia Middle East and North Africa, the service has been expanded in response to the positive feedback it received last year.

“As the number one mobile device company in the world, we are now expanding into offering services and software that empower and enable Nokia device owner to fully realise the benefits of mobility, and the Ramadan applications come as part of this strategy,” he said.

“In 2007, 14% of Nokia’s global net sales came from the Middle East and Africa (MEA), so this is a region that is greatly important to us and we have committed to ensuring that we are tailoring solutions that meet the local needs,” he added.

Nokia phones in the region that come pre-loaded with Ramadan applications include the Nokia N78, Nokia N70 Music Edition, Nokia E51, Nokia 3120 Classic, Nokia 6500 Slide, Nokia 6300 and Nokia 2630. Existing users of the Nokia N73, N95, N95 8GB, N82, E90, E71, Nokia 6210 Navigator and Nokia 6220 Classic can download the applications online.

The 2008 Ramadan offering includes mobile applications with user-interfaces available in Arabic, French, English and Urdu, while mobile content features a choice of over 80 wallpapers, ringtones, themes and Anasheed (Islamic songs).
