10-day Ramadan holiday gets teacher backing

The Kuwait Teachers Society (KTS) has backed a proposed Ramadan holiday law that will declare the last 10 days of the Islamic holy month as official holiday.

If the law is passed then the year’s other holidays will be cancelled - with the exception of Eid Al-Fitr, Eid Al-Adha, National and Liberation Day, the Kuwait Times daily reported on Monday.

Abdullah Al-Kandari, head of the KTS, said that all Muslims whether Kuwaiti citizens or expatriates should be presented with the opportunity of worship during the last 10 days of Ramadan.

He told the newspaper that sanctioning these holidays would help tackle the problem of absenteeism at the Ministry of Education, especially when students are absent from school during this period.

Ramadan holiday

I am an expat teaching in an international school in Dubai. Our school has given the last 10 days of ramadan as holiday and we only return to teaching on 5 October. For teachers who are muslim, this is a difficult time to teach as there are prayers every night, so in this regard I think it is a fantastic idea. For older students who are fasting, the last 10 days are also difficult. The timing of the holiday is unfortunate as it is only a few weeks into the academic year, but this has to do with nature, which is out of anyones control. I think it is a good idea to have the last 10 days of Ramadan as a holiday. As schools in Dubai have different holiday periods, this holiday has not been given to all schools by the government - it is merely at the school's discretion.

In our childhood, we used to have the whole of Ramadan as school/college holidays. Now it disturbs me that we as adults are disturbed by our children's educational programs during the holy month of Ramadan. Since times have now changed, it would be highly desirable to have at least the last 10 days of Ramadan as holidays for all to use it for prayers and devotion and revive the Sunnah of Etiqaf. It is acceptable to us to have other unnecessary holidays cancelled to allow these Ramadan holidays.

..where were these ideas when we were young..?

..where were these ideas when we were going to school? We bore all the hardships, even 1 day weekends for most of our school and college life.
