U-turn on municipality medical screenings

The UAE labour ministry is to resume accepting medical certificates issued by Dubai Municipality health centres amid growing confusion over new procedures for mandatory visa medical tests.

A senior official said on Monday a memorandum understanding (MoU) has been signed allowing municipality centres to issue certificates, which will now carry the logo of Dubai's Department of Health and Medical Services, UAE daily Gulf News reported on Monday.

Certificates issued by municipality centres are currently being rejected by the labour ministry following legislation, which came into force July 1, that all medical tests for residence and labour visas must be carried out at facilities run by the health ministry, Dubai Health Authority and Abu Dhabi Health Authority.

The change has been causing a lot of confusion, with many companies still sending employees to municipality centres only to have their certificates rejected.

No date has yet been set for when certificates issued by municipality centres will be accepted again.
