Abu Dhabi gets runway two safety boost

RUNWAY SAFETY: New system is being installed to help air traffic controllers cope with increased plane movements.

A new hi-tech surveillance system is to be fitted on Abu Dhabi International Airport's second runway in an effort to ensure aircraft safety.

The provision of the IntelliDAR system will air traffic controllers as the airport gets ready for major expansion over the next few months.

The system uses a network of digital imaging sensors, coupled with advanced computer technology to detect and monitor traffic movements on the airport surface.

It identifies blind spots, detects non-cooperative targets, and mitigates the risk of possible runway collisions.

Searidge Technologies and its partner in the Gulf region, Bayanat Airports Engineering & Supplies on Monday announced the award of a contract by the Abu Dhabi Airport Company (ADAC) to supply the Searidge Technologies IntelliDAR system.

Massimiliano Dosi, chief operating officer, of Abu Dhabi Airports Company, said: “It is a growing airport with a goal of providing best of breed systems for our customers.”

Abu Dhabi International Airport is currently undertaking significant expansion to improve facilities for travellers flying out of the UAE's capital city.

A newly constructed runway, due to open later this year, will allow the airport to increase its number of aircraft flying in and out and the IntelliDAR system will help air traffic controllers cope with the rise in movements.

In cases of confusion, an air traffic controller will have the ability to visually validate what is seen on the screen by viewing the target through the real-time video protocol provided by the system.
