New plan to tackle illegal parking

A new strategy is being put in place to improve the problem of illegal parking in Abu Dhabi.

Wide areas of traffic islands and commercial and residential complexes with ample parking lots are among the plans being envisaged by transport chiefs, reported news agency WAM.

Major Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi at the Abu Dhabi Traffic Department said that the new projects would be carried out in coordination with the Abu Dhabi Municipality.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that more than 500 fines were handed out in just one day to motorists who parked in undesignated areas in Abu Dhabi.
Police are currently running a month-long campaign to catch illegal parkers in the UAE capital.

The practice of parking in undesignated areas and leaving vehicles along main streets has increased considerably, police chiefs said.

Abu Dhabi has several underground parking lots. However, these underground parking lots are currently under utilized as they are paid parking lots. Abu Dhabi should implement a well planned On Street Parking Control System similar to what Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman have done in order to control the parking spaces on street. Once the parking spaces on street have to be paid for, the public will start utilizing the underground parking lots too which will ease the current parking problem in Abu Dhabi.

One more issue as an example that took place in Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi authorities have decided to provide residence with beautiful beach for summer. The beach is there but I have one important question, did they provide parking area for the beach visitors??? The only possible and very limited parking area is provided at the opposite side of the beach. Are families expected to carry their children and ask them to cross a wide and dangerous street to reach the beach area?? This is an example of why parking problems are getting worse in Abu Dhabi.

I fully agree with the initiative to be taken to eliminate illegal parking. But there is really a serious problem in Abu Dhabi that has been going on for long time and it is even getting worse with the tremendous growth in Abu Dhabi population. AD traffic police can even implement the highest possible fines for illegal parking, but before that, they have to provide enough parking spaces for residents below their buildings. Very minor buildings in Abu Dhabi provide parking lot, and all these high rise towers' residents has no option where to park their cars. In brief, please provide us with enough legal parking places and punish who ever do not follow.

While I condemn all the wrong parkings, at same time I also wonder what to do when a proper parking space is not available. Take for example the residential area around Old Passport road. There's a jungle of cars there, most of the times impossible to find a correct lawful parking place. So one is forced to park in undesignated areas on the street.

I fail to understand why the authorities are not forcing new buildings to have basement parkings for their residents. So many new buildings have sprung up everywhere and hardly any of them (if at all any one) has basement parking.
