3,000 fake phones seized in crackdown

More than 3,000 fake mobile phone handsets and accessories have been seized during an inspection of shops in Abu Dhabi.

Inspectors from the planning and economy department of Abu Dhabi Municipality uncovered the huge haul of imitation phones and equipment, including headphones, chargers, during inspections at 50 shops in the UAE capital.

Hamad Salem Al Nuaimi, the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, warned that strict penalties would await shop owners trading in counterfeit equipment.

Inspectors involved in the operation were all trained on so they could instantly recognise which phones and accessories were fake and which were genuine, he said.

Ahmed Al Qubaisi, chief of Inspection and Control, said further campaigns would be carried out in the future in a bid to protect consumers and reduce the amount of fake items being traded in Abu Dhabi.
