Fears are growing the dam holding back a 2.6-square kilometre lake of sewage could fail, flooding parts of Jeddah.
The body of water, known locally as ‘Musk Lake’ because of its smell, contains 9.5 million cubic metres of sewage water, with around 800 tanker trucks dumping 50,000 cubic metres of sewage there every day.
The head of the city’s Municipal Council environment and hygiene committee has warned of a breach in the sand dam that is blocking the lake, which he said could lead to widespread flooding in eastern parts of the city, Saudi daily Arab News reported on Thursday.
Hussein Al-Baar warned the threat of flooding is one of several issues with the lake that could have dangerous environmental consequences.
Jeddah Municipality has denied there is any immediate threat to the environment and said there are urgent projects underway to find solutions for sewage dumps in the city.
