Lulu eyes Express expansion

Emke Group's executive director Ashraf Ali M.A. has admitted it will open "at least 10 new stores" in its convenience format Lulu Express in the UAE by 2010.
"As the real estate sector here is witnessing a phenomenal boom time, we see great potential for small to medium format stores, primarily focusing on the grocery & fresh food category. These will be most suitable for the suburban townships and gated communities coming up across the UAE. We also plan for some of these stores to be on the highways," he said.
Prototype shops will be sized between 20-30,000ft2, featuring easy checkouts and convenient parking.
Ali said the convenience sector held strong potential as new real estate developments are being announced regularly and all these projects have to address the need of retail solutions for the residents.
"While big format hypermarkets and shopping malls will continue to see double-digit growth, the convenience stores will fill in as the daily shopping destination, especially for perishable goods," Ali predicted.
