Emirates SkyCargo has teamed up with a US research institute to develop the ‘White Cover’, a cheap and environmentally friendly solution to cool chain problems, especially in hot climates such as the Middle East.
The ‘White Cover’, a patent for which is pending, is a lightweight and breathable product that is designed to shield shipments from heat during door-to-door transits.
"This is the first time this unique type of protection which completely encloses the shipment has been used for the air freight of temperature sensitive goods,” said Therese Puetz, SkyCargo’s manager of cargo business development and projects. “It works on the principle of solar radiation and offers significant thermal protection, also allowing cooling of the shipment during transport and cold storage operations.”
The solution is ideal for ‘living’ food and flower freight as it resists air and water penetration while allowing moisture to escape, and it has also been popular with transporters of pharmaceuticals, especially at room temperature.
Weighing only 3kg in its larger version, the ‘White Cover’ takes two people eight minutes for application on one pallet, and is 100% recyclable. SkyCargo has indicated that it is about one tenth the weight of other insulated covers available on the market, making additional shipping costs negligible. The product is currently exclusively used on Emirates SkyCargo flights.
