Passenger numbers at Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ) surged by 18 percent in July compared to the previous year, with the carrier attributing the rise to ongoing improvements in air and ground services.

The number of passengers RJ transported on its network, which combines 56 international destinations, rose from 236,000 in July last year to 278,000 in the same month this year, the airline announced on Wednesday.

At the same time, the total percentage of seats it managed to fill grew to 81 percent, marking an increase of five percent over July 2007.

RJ said the rising demand was a result of better travel procedures including automated reservation and sales systems, e-ticketing, and the introduction of modern aircraft with the highest comfort and safety features.

Flight frequencies went up by five percent from 2,817 flights in July 2007 to 3,244 last month. In addition, total flying hours grew by 16 percent from 8,255 to 9,577 hours.
