VTEL Jordan invests in Reliance Globalcom submarine fiber-optic cable project

An agreement to set up Jordan’s second submarine cable landing station has been signed by VTEL Jordan, a subsidiary of VTEL Holdings, and Reliance Globalcom, a division of India’s Reliance Communications.

This will be the first terabit cable landing in the country, reflecting growing demand for broadband connectivity. Operations are expected to commence by September 2009, bringing about a reduction in IP bandwidth costs and enhancing broadband penetration in Jordan.

“Our commitment to the Reliance Globalcom submarine cable project and initial investment in fiber infrastructure throughout the country will be $70 million in the first year, and is expected to reach $150 million within the coming three years. This is a clear testimony to our strong belief as Jordanians in our country and its encouraging investment climate' stated Ghiath Sukhtian, VTEL executive vice chairman.

”The agreement with VTEL will create immense opportunities for consumers and enterprises to connect seamlessly not only with other countries in the Middle East region, but also across the world through our robust global cable network backbone', said Mark Thompson, president of Reliance Globalcom - Data Business.

”The connectivity platform will help VTEL cater to the accelerating regional demand for high-bandwidth applications from ADSL, WiMax-based fixed wireless broadband and the soon to be launched 3G services in Jordan”, Thompson added.

Reliance Globalcom owns the world’s largest private undersea cable system that spans 65,000 kilometres.
