Officials in Sharjah have given the green light to a $23 million project to solve parking problems in residential and commercial areas.
A nine-storey car park spaning 5,300 square metres will be built at Abu Shagara under a five-year plan to establish 10 new parking facilities in the city.
Dr Salah Al Haj, director general of Sharjah Municipality, said each floor of the car park would accommodate 1,681 cars, reported news agency WAM.
"The facility will be completed in 12 months and will be one of Sharjah signature development projects," he said after signing an agreement for its construction on Thursday with Mohammed Al Dhahiri, chairman of Al Dhahiri Contracting Group.
"We have studied all available alternative solutions to the parking woes before it becomes worse," he added.
