DMI to launch live Quran contest channel

Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) is to launch a special channel to broadcast live coverage of a Holy Quran memorising event taking place during Ramadan.

The government-owned company, which runs Dubai TV, Sama Dubai, Dubai One and Dubai Sports Channel, will be setting up a new channel for the 12th edition of the competition which will start on the first day of the holy month.

Holy Quran memorisers from 85 Muslim countries will compete in the the Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA), organisers have revealed.

Ibrahim Bumelha, chairman of the Award Organising Committee, said that contestants from Switzerland, Uzbekistan, Botswana and Zanzibar will be taking part in the event for the first time.

He told news agency WAM that a number of leading scholars would also deliver lectures tackling a wide-range of Islamic issues.

"Upon their arrival to Dubai, memorisers will be subject to an initial test to gauge their memorisation ability of the holy book and rules of recitation," he added.

Meanwhile, work timings have been announced for the Ministries and public federal departments during Ramadan.

They will be from 9am to 2pm, according to a circular issued by the Civil Service Council chairman and Health Minister Humaid Al Qatami.
