Police target beggars during Ramadan

POLICE CRACKDOWN: on begging in Abu Dhabi during Ramadan.

Police in Abu Dhabi said on Monday that stamping out begging during Ramadan would be a top priority.

The UAE capital city witnesses a sudden surge in the number of beggars and last year 93 people were arrested and deported.

Most of those arrested were Asians and Arabs, some of whom were later found to be living in hotels.

Lieutenant General Saif Al Shafaar, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Interior, told UAE daily Gulf News on Monday:. "Stamping out begging is a top priority for us. Unless a crime is committed, those found begging are arrested and deported after security measures such as iris scans are performed."
